Region 20 Student-Athletes Showcase Academic Excellence
ARNOLD, Md. (9/8/2022) – A total of 197 Region 20 student-athletes were recognized on the 2021-2022 NJCAA All-Academic Teams by earning a grade point average (GPA) of 3.6 or higher as announced by the national office this summer. Those student-athletes represent 18-member institutions and several are dual sport athletes. WVU Potomac State tallied the most individual student-athletes to earn awards, with an astonishing 37 earning recognition. Mandi Larkin, Athletic Director of Potomac State, shared the following comments of the Catamounts success, "I am extremely proud of the academic success of our student-athletes. This obviously is also success that has been achieved thanks to efforts by coaches, professors, and support staff throughout campus. All of the athletic teams at WVU Potomac State aim for a minimum 3.0 team GPA and that goal has not only been met but clearly exceeded by several teams on campus. It's always impressive when coaches have a hard time choosing who to nominate for our annual athletic achievement awards, because they have so many 4.0 student-athletes to pick from. Clearly our coaches are not only recruiting great students, but also helping to guide them towards success while they are at WVU Potomac State."
The NJCAA recognizes three All-Academic Teams: First, Second, and Third, based on GPA. First Team honorees earned a perfect 4.0 GPA, while the Second and Third Teams were awarded on scales of 3.80 to 3.99 and 3.60 to 3.79 respectively. Student-athletes who earned the award must have completed two full-time semesters, participated in at least one season at the varsity level, and earned a minimum of 24 semester hours. Student-athletes who graduated mid-year were also eligible for the award.
Additionally, Anne Arundel, Butler, Carroll, Harford, Penn Highlands and WVU Potomac State each had at least one team earn NJCAA Academic Team of the Year Honors.
Congratulations to our student-athletes on their tremendous efforts in the classroom this year, and to our coaches and staff for their mentorship and support along the way.
