Westmoreland Wins on Walk-off in the 10th

On day one in Myrtle Beach, the Westmoreland County Community College baseball team took 10 innings to earn their first win of the season in walk-off fashion 9-8 over Eastern University.

Eastern jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Wolfpack got on the board from a suicide squeeze by Matt Scarpa, scoring Bobby Etze to make it 4-1. In the bottom of the sixth with Westmoreland down 6-4, the Wolfpack scored 4 runs on a two run triple by Jake Gedekoh, his second triple of the day. Then the next batter Jake Smith hit a 2 run home run to give the Wolfpack a 8-6. In the seventh Eastern scored 2 runs to bring the score to 8-8. It stayed that way until the 10th inning when Jake Smith hit a ball to center field and an error allowed Vincent Dacules to score from second to earn the 9-8 win, their first of the season.

The Wolfpack wracked up 13 hits, with Brandon Bell leading the way with 3 hits. Gedekoh, Dylan Stonebraker, Dacules, and Troy Waugh each had 2 hits a piece. Gedekoh and Smith both drove in a pair of runs, while Anthony Massari, and Matt Scarpa both added in an RBI each.

Four pitchers took to the mound for the Wolfpack, with Larry Weaver earning the start going 2 innings allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits. Brady Stivenson came in in-relief and went the next 3 innings allowing 2 runs, 1 earned. Jake Smith came in to pitch the sixth through eighth inning allowing 2 runs while striking out 5 batters. Dylan Stonebraker came in and shut the door in the ninth and tenth inning allowing no runs and no hits in his two innings of work, earning his first win of the season.

It will be a quick turnaround for Westmoreland, as they play a doubleheader tomorrow against Muskegon College at 5pm and Delta College at 8:30pm.
