WVU Potomac State Climbs in National Rankings

Charlotte, NC – With a tremendous 2023 resume, the WVU Potomac State College Softball team has moved into the 19th spot of the Division II rankings. Ranked 20th in the preseason poll, and carrying that ranking through the first week of the season, two early losses dropped the Catamounts from the rankings. Those losses were to Division I Florence-Darlington Technical College and second ranked Division II Louisburg College. Since, WVU Potomac State has lost just one game, compiling an overall record of 38-3. They've gone 36-1 since the loss to Louisburg on February 26, and before a loss to Division II ranked Del Tech, they won 31 straight games.   

Abby Peace has been phenomenal in the circle with an 18-0 record, a 1.15 earned run average, and 218 strikeouts. Peace earned Region 20 Division II Softball Player of the Month for March after going 8-0 in the circle and hitting .386 with 23 RBI and five homeruns. Peace also earned NJCAA Division II Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of April 5 to April 11.

Alexa Shoemaker has led the Catamounts offensively, hitting .607 on the season with 19 homeruns and 68 runs batted in. Shoemaker was recognized as the NJCAA Division II Player of the Week for April 19 to 25 after hitting a blistering .722 with five homeruns and 16 RBI.

Three other Catamounts are hitting above .400 with Alexis Bailey at .517 and 15 homers, Grace Walsh at .453 and Ashley Joll at .400. With a team batting average at .401, WVU Potomac State has outscored opponents 400 to 107.

The Catamounts are the top ranked team within Region 20 and host Montgomery College on May 6 and 7 in the first round of the Region 20 Tournament. The winner will advance to the final four hosted by CCBC Catonsville May 11-13. The winner of the tournament will claim the Region 20 and Mid Atlantic District Championship, earning a berth to the National Championship, May 23-27 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
