Mechanics Stun Host Anne Arundel, 13-5

Facing what many thought could be considered their toughest test to date, the Williamson lacrosse team shook off an early deficit and ran away from host Anne Arundel Community College 13-5 on Friday night to remain undefeated at 6-0 on the season.

After falling behind 2-1 early on, Williamson came storming back to take a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The game from there on out was pretty much owned by Williamson.  They stretched the lead to 6-3 at half, and blew the game opne with a 4-1 third quarter advantage to make it 10-4 heading into the final stanza.  They then outscore the Riverhawks 3-1 in that period to close things out 13-5.

Last year, Williamson upset Anne Arundel at Williamson.  That left a bad taste in their mouths and they were primed to get revenge.  A total team effort by Williamson ensured they would not get it.

Interestingly enough, Williamson had six different players score a goal in the first half.  Matt Dickinson, Anthony Zollo, Cooper Conroy, Nick Burdumy, Sean Lohr and Rob Wagner each scored for Williamson to give them that 6-3 halftime lead.

"The great thing about this team is just that-you cannot key on any one player because all of our guys are capable of scoring at any point for us," explained Hall of Fame head coach Jim DeRose.  "We don't care who scores, everyone gets the credit for our wins-offense and defense."

If ever a team might have wanted to think about keying on a player, Anne Arundel might have wanted to think about doing so with Matt Dickinson, as he was unstoppable in the second half for Williamson. After Cooper Conroy scored to but Williamson up 7-3, Dickinson went nuts, as he scored six straight goals for the Mechanics to ice things and keep Williamson undefeated.

Williamson goalie Jack Welsh also played a big part in the win, as he faced 19 shots on goal and stopped 14 of them.

"To be honest, I was not happy with our performance last Friday night (a 16-9 win over Sussex).  I don't think anybody was.  We challenged the guys to step things up this week and they did just that.  That is the good teams do.  They respond to the challenge.

"We knew they were gunning for us.  We told the guys that Anne Arundel was having a party, and they were looking for us to be the cake."

Thanks to the all-around play from Williamson tonight, it looks like the Riverhawks will be going hungry for another year.

Williamson has some time to recover until they host Rowan University in a key Liberty division game at 7:00 P.M.
