Region 20 Announces March Athletes of the Month

Congratulations to the NJCAA Region 20 Athletes of the Month for March, 2024. The Region recognized eight student-athletes from five member institutions.  

Men's Lacrosse
Ben Nyberg, So., A, CCBC Essex
Nyberg scored 27 goals and assisted 17 others in six games for the Knights in March. He scored five man-up goals and one man-down tally. Nyberg picked up 16 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers. In the Knights' only loss of the month, at No. 2 Nassau, Nyberg scored two goals and added three assists. He currently leads the nation in goals, is second in the nation in shots and shots on goal, and fourth in assists.

Women's Lacrosse
Ashlynn Deans, M, Fr., Anne Arundel
Deans scored five goals on just 10 shots for the Riverhawks, who went 2-1 in March. She had three goals in the season opener and two in a road win at Harford. Deans led the Riverhawks with 11 draw controls, and also had six groundballs and six caused turnovers.

DI Baseball
Robert Phelps, So., SS, Harford
Phelps batted .441 (26-59) in March as the Owls' leadoff hitter. In 19 games, he collected 10 doubles and four home runs, driving in 13 and scoring 26 runs himself. Phelps slugged .814 in March and had an on base percentage of .528. Once on the basepath, Phelps was successful in 14 of 16 stolen base attempts. He posted a .978 fielding percentage at short stop with 13 putouts and 32 assists while turning four double plays.

DII Baseball
John Greenawalt, So., 2B, Anne Arundel
Greenawalt hit .537 (36-67) with hits in all but two of the Riverhawks' 19 games in March, closing out the month on a seven-game hit streak. He had 13 multi-hit games and totaled six extra base hits. The second baseman drove in 11 runs and crossed the plate 20 times. In 81 plate appearances, Greenawalt had six sacrifices and drew six walks. On the basepath, he was successful in all four stolen base attempts. In the field, Greenawalt turned seven double plays for the Riverhawks, who went 13-6 in the month. Greenawalt leads Region 20 and ranks sixth in NJCAA Division II in batting average; he also leads the Region and ranks seventh nationally in hits.

DIII Baseball
Junior Guillen, Fr., MIF, Prince George's
Guillen hit .370 in March with 10 hits and four RBI in just eight games. He went 3-for-4 in a 2-0 win early in the month, and recorded four multi-hit games. On defense, Guillen recorded nine putouts and 11 assists while helping turn four double plays.

DI Softball
Brooke Hasegawa, So., OF, Harford
Hasegawa hit .525 in March, collecting 32 hits including eight doubles, two triples, and six home runs while drawing seven walks and striking out just twice in 70 plate appearances. She drove in 25 runs and scored 27 herself. She made 48 putouts in 48 chances in center field, and successfully stole eight bases in 10 attempts. Hasegawa closed the month with 10-straight multi-hit games.

DII Softball
Avery Sickeri, So., 2B, Frederick
Sickeri had a remarkable performance both at the plate and in the field for Frederick in March. She hit .679 (19-28) with six doubles, three triples, and three home runs. Sickeri crossed the plate herself 11 times and drove in 10 runs. In 35 plate appearances she drew five walks and did not strike out a single time. She totaled an on base percentage of .743 and slugged a staggering 1.357 in 10 games. Defensively, her play at second base has been flawless: in 29 chances, she recorded 12 putouts and 17 assists without committing an error for a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000.

Track & Field
Andre Wilson, Fr., CCBC Essex
Wilson competed in three meets in march, finishing in the top 15 in each. He opened the month with a 10th place finish in the 4x400 and 12th in the 200m at the Lloyd Sigler Spring Meet at Salisbury. Two weeks later at the Towson Spring Opener, he finished 13th in the 100m and in third place in the pole vault in a meet that had 23 teams of mostly four-year schools. He closed out the month with PR's in the 4x100 and 4x400 at the Towson Invitational and also PR'd the 100m where he finished 12th overall, again against 22 teams of mostly four-year competition.
