Hawks 0-1-1 After First Two Games of Season

The College of Southern Maryland Hawks women's soccer team is 0-1-1 after their first two games of their 2023 season.

The Hawks opened with a 2-0 loss against the Harcum College Bears on Friday, Aug. 18, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. They then tied the NJCAA Division II No. 9-ranked CCBC Essex Knights 1-1 on Tuesday, Aug. 22, in La Plata, Maryland.

Freshman midfielder/forward Megan Hinton recorded the lone shot for CSM against Harcum. Third-year goalkeeper Ashley Cox recorded 12 saves against the Bears.

CCBC Essex got on the board first on Tuesday with their goal in the fourth minute of the game.

CSM responded in the 19th minute when freshman midfielder/defender Zoi Whitsett got behind the CCBC Essex defense on a breakaway and made a move around the Knights' goalie to score into the wide open net.

The rest of the game was played fairly evenly as CCBC Essex had four shots to CSM's two in the first half and 10 to CSM's eight in the second half.

Cox made four saves in the game. Hinton had three shots on goal, freshman defender Cali Barber had two, and sophomore midfielder/defender Madelyn Minichino and freshman forward Alexis Corcoran each registered one.

The last time CSM didn't lose to (beat or tied) CCBC Essex was October 30, 2014, when the Hawks beat the Knights 2-1 in the Region XX Tournament semifinal. CSM had gone 0-13 against them since.
