Women's Basketball: Moye Scores 81, Gagan a Quad-Double in 139-40 Win Over Nighthawks

Annandale, Va. -- Two-time defending Maryland Juco Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Month and NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball Player of the Week Mya Moye (Anacostia) last night paid tribute to her basketball idol Kobe Bryant with an 81-point performance in the Knights' 139-40 defeat of Region XX foe Northern Virginia.

The Knights are now 22-2 overall and riding an 11-game winning streak. They have not lost since December 14.

The sophomore's persistance on the hardwood last night was historic.

She set the NJCAA single-game women's basketball scoring record and record for most field goals in a game (32), dating back to 1975 and across all divisions.

Moye had 31 points at haltime before errupting for 50 points in the second half, shooting 32-56 (57%) overall and hitting on 11-of-18 (61%) three-point attempts.

She also finished with nine rebounds, seven assists and six steals.

"I couldn't believe what was happening," said head coach Mike Seney. "It was like everything went her way. It was just remarkable. Mya Moye has been a special scorer since her high school days and last night she showed us what the [Kobe Bryant] Mamba mentality is all about."

Moye is now 3rd in NJCAA Division II in scoring with 23 points per game. She is also 4th in the nation with 6.7 assists per game.

Perhaps a bit overshadowed last night was sophomore Kasey Gagan's quadruple-double.

The Univeristy of Rhode Island transfer had 12 points, 11 rebounds, 15 assists and 15 steals.

"Unfortunately, Kasey [Gagan's] quadruple-double will be overlooked, but what an incredible feat," Seney said. "What I loved the most was she was feeding Mya trying to help her get her special achievement. She really understood the moment."

Gagan averages 4.2 steals per game, which ranks her 6th in NJCAA Division II.

Freshman Daysha Reid also chipped in with a career-high 22 points and had 12 boards for her second collegiate double-double.

The Knights return home on Wednesday, February 5 to play host to Garrett College. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
