Cardinals Beat the Cold and the Jersey Blues in Wild Comeback

Amidst freezing temperatures and fierce winds, the CCBC Catonsville Cardinals softball team came from behind twice to defeat Brookdale Community College 6-5 on March 14.

A walk-off single from sophomore outfielder Mackenzie Brooks (Hammond) ensured a hard-fought Cardinals victory and a sweep of Brookdale.

The Jersey Blues struck first in the top of the third, scoring twice to take a 2-0 lead. Catonsville responded immediately with a two-RBI single from freshman third baseman Tori Bache (Northeast) to tie the game. An RBI double from sophomore pitcher Felicity Voss (Catonsville) and an RBI single from Brooks led to a 4-2 Catonsville victory.

Brookdale tied the game in the next inning, then took the lead in the top of the fifth. Trailing once, again, the Cardinals found themselves fighting a battle against not just the Jersey Blues, but also the weather. Intense winds slammed into the field all game long, leading to massive clouds of dust kicking up.

"Honestly, it isn't that bad out on the field," sophomore outfielder Abigail Heagy (Eastern Tech) said. "However, you can really feel it in the dugout".

A double from Brooks tied the game once again in the bottom of the fifth, but it wouldn't be until the bottom of the seventh that the game would be won. Down to their last out, the Cardinals turned to Brooks who singled into right field. Bache, who had stolen second base one play earlier, came home to score the winning run, giving the Cardinals their third straight victory.

Brooks finished the evening with three RBIs, two doubles, and a stolen base. Bache added a double, two RBIs, and a stolen base as well. Voss had an RBI and a double.
