Baseball Sweeps Corning in Four Game Series

ARNOLD, MD – The Anne Arundel Community College baseball team earned a four-game sweep of visiting Corning Community College over the weekend, defeating the Red Barons 6-5 and 9-6 Saturday, following with Sunday wins of 9-3 and 12-7.

Saturday's first game went to extra innings with Jon Alderman driving in the winning run on a double. Corning opened up the scoring in the first, plating one run on an error. Alderman tied the game in the bottom of the inning, also scoring on an error. Corning added a pair in the both the third and the seventh. Tripp Templeton tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, driving in two runs with a single.

Gavin Umphries got AACC out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth with a three-pitch strikeout, setting up the Riverhawks for the win in the bottom of the frame. Pat Mason got on board via hit by pitch, stole second, stole third, and came around to score on Alderman's two-out double.

In Saturday's nightcap, the game was tied at six headed into the bottom of the sixth before AACC used a pair of hits and heads up baserunning to score three. Bradley Zoellner pitched the first five innings, allowing six runs on five hits while fanning eight and walking three. Matt

Johnson came on in the sixth to pick up the win, striking out two and allowing one hit

In Sunday's opener, Noah June and Shelby Wheeler combined for a no-hitter, as June went the first six innings allowing three runs and fanning two. Wheeler allowed one run in the seventh after coming in with the bases loaded. AACC never trailed in the game, scoring three runs in the first, second, and sixth innings. The Riverhawks recorded nine hits, four for extra bases in the game.

In the nightcap, the Riverhawks scored five runs in the second, but found themselves trailing, 7-6, in the fifth. AACC plated four in the bottom of the inning on just one hit. Wheeler took advantage of an error, a wild pitch, and a passed ball to tie the game before Jaden Jones hit a two-run single to give AACC back the lead.

The Riverhawks added two insurance runs in the sixth, seeing Wheeler steal home for the 12th run.

Johnson earned the win in relief, allowing one run on two hits in 1.1 innings. Starter Logan Kirk fanned five on just 17 pitches in two innings of work, surrendering zero hits.

AACC hits the road Tuesday for a 3:30 pm single game at Prince George's Community College.
