Skipjacks Start Season Off With A Double Header Sweep Over PSU York
Bel Air, Md- The Chesapeake College Skipjacks (2-0) opened their 2018 season with a double header against Penn State York (0-2) at Harford Community College. Game one started out a little chilly and the rain coming down on the two teams. The Skipjacks sophomore pitcher, Mike YaSenka, struggled to find his command but kept his team in it only allowing one run in three innings of work. In the bottom of the third the Reinoso twins made their presence known. Livan started the rally off with a one out walk, while Dayan then launched a two run home run over the left centerfield fence to put the Skipjacks up for good.
In relief freshman Allan Saathoff showed that he could be a dominate force out of the pen. Saathoff threw 4 quality innings giving up five hits with two strikeouts and only allowing one earned run in the win. On the offensive side of the ball the Jacks saw two hits out of Dayan Reinoso, Christian Murphy, and Austin Benton. Dayan's 2 run homer started the bats off and the Jacks finished the game with eleven hits to PSU York's 6. The final score in game one ended 5-3 in favor of the Skipjacks.
Coming off the win the Jacks were ready for game two and the bats came to play. Chesapeake went down by one early in the first after starter Joseph Nahas struggled to find his control and threw a pitch to the backstop to allow a run in. The Jacks were not down for long when their offense erupted and could not be stopped from the third inning on. Chesapeake plated three in the second, nine in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the sixth. This offensive barrage is what many expected out of the Skipjacks after the confidence they built coming off the fall season.
D. Reinoso had another strong offensive performance going 4 for 4 with a triple and three RBI's. Devin Brogden joined the hit party with a 4 for 5, 3 RBI day, finishing a home run shy of the cycle. Christian Murphy, Adan Reinsoso, and Alex Cordon also showed strong performances each having two hits apiece.
As a team, the Skipjacks finished with 18 hits to only 3 strikeouts in game two. The pitchers showed up in game two as a combined seven pitchers only allowed 6 hits in seven innings with 12 strikeouts. The final score of Game two ended with the Skipjacks up 19-4.
This was a great start to the season for Chesapeake as they get ready to head down to Myrtle Beach, SC to play 6 games in a three-day span.
