No. 7 Lady Owls Roll Past Anne Arundel

The Prince George's Community College women's basketball team returned to the floor on Saturday for the first time in the new year for their first game action since December 10th, taking on Region 20 Division 3 opponent Anne Arundel Community College on the road. The Owls defense didn't miss a beat, setting a new season best in opponent scoring as they allowed the Riverhawks to score just 29 points while recording 64 of their own to earn a convincing 35-point victory.

The Owls are now winners of two straight and currently sit at 9-2 on the season after suffering back-to-back losses in December to Division 2 Chesapeake College and CCBC Essex on the road.

Prince George's never trailed against Anne Arundel, with the Owls building a 20-8 lead at the half which saw Prince George's hold the Riverhawks without a made field goal in the second period. The Owls defense forced Anne Arundel to go 0 for 20 from the floor during the stretch as the Riverhawks managed just 2 points which came from a pair of made free throws. Sophomore Maranda Carey led all scorers at the break with 8 points.

Both offenses picked up in the final two periods beginning with Prince George's who jumped out with a 10-0 run in the third and remained in control, outscoring Anne Arundel 18-9 and 26-12 in the closing quarters to earn their first victory in the new year. Four different Owls finished in double figures with Alicia Jones finishing as the game's leading scorer with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Vanessa Schwarzmann and Carey both had 12 points and 8 rebounds each while Janiah Williams ended with 10 points and 6 boards.

Saturday's win also moves the Owls to 2-0 in region 20 divisional matchups with one more region divisional game remaining, an away game at Westmoreland on February 5th. The Owls will have another stretch off before their next contest which takes place next week on Wednesday, January 18th on the road against Montgomery College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
