Owls Fall To Montgomery College In Tight Contest

Prince George's men's basketball team took a trip to Montgomery College on Saturday afternoon, January 25th to take on the Raptors in a clash between Maryland JUCO rivals. In a back and forth battle, the Raptors ended up handing the Owls a 90-84 loss to drop Prince George's to 13-6 on the year, including 3-5 in Maryland JUCO play. The Raptors improve to 14-5, 6-1 MD JUCO.

The Owls came out hot, hitting their first four shot attempts as they quickly built a 10-2 lead just a minute and a half into the contest. The Raptors were able to claw back from their early deficit, going on a 12-2 run to take their first lead of the game, 14-12. Both squads continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the half as the Owls turned to the reigning NJCAA Division III men's basketball player of the week, Tunde Scrivner who has been scoring at will all season. Despite the early lead, the Raptors were able to take advantage of Prince George's 10 first half turnovers to send the Owls into halftime trailing 35-42. Center David Burriss lead the Owls in scoring at the break with 9 points.

Prince George's climbed back multiple times in the second half, first after trailing by as many as 9 points to bring themselves within a single point of the Raptors to trail 52-53 with thirteen minutes remaining. Minutes later the Owls again found themselves down, this time a 12 point deficit as they trailed 54-66. This time, Prince George's was able to put together an 8-0 run and later a 5-0 run to tie the game at 78 after Jasper Sterling connected on a layup with 2:26 remaining. Sterling again tied up the score at 80 with 1:26 after a pair of made free throws. The Raptors created a 4 point separation with only 18 seconds remaining and were then able to hold off the Owls with made free throws down the stretch to send the Owls home with a 90-84 loss.

The Owls were led by sophomore forward Isaiah Miles who recorded his 6th double-double of the year with a 21 point, 21 rebound performance. Three other Owls also scored in double figures in the loss. Prince George's collectively shot an efficient 84% (21 of 25) from the free throw line while also holding Montgomery without a made three-pointer all game (0 for 11) but struggled to hold onto the ball, resulting in 20 turnovers which proved to be the difference in the end. The Owls will look to bounce back against Garrett College on the road this Wednesday, January 29th in another conference matchup.
