Losing Streak Reaches Five for Lady Cardinals

On February 13, the Cardinals women's basketball team took on Howard Community College, losing 64-50.

After a close first half that ended with the Cardinals down by one, the Cardinals would struggle to find their footing offensively in the second half, as the Cardinals would drop their fifth straight, losing 64-50.

In the first quarter, the Cardinals would be first on the scoreboard, thanks to an Amaree McKnight (National Christian Academy) jump shot. Lauryn Russell (Pallotti High School) would find the scoresheet early in her first game returning from her injury. Ah'niya Tillery (Coppin Academy) would end the first quarter with a three-pointer, with the Cardinals leading 12-6.

In the second quarter, Howard Community College would start off strong, tying the game at 16-16 with five minutes left in the half. A Lauryn Russell three-pointer would break the tie, followed by a Destiny Perry (Sparrows Point High School) layup saw the Cardinals lead 21-16. Going into the break, the Cardinals would find themselves down 24-23.

In the third quarter, the Cardinals would struggle to find a rhythm on offense. The Cardinals would only manage seven points in the third quarter, finding themselves down 39-30 with the fourth quarter left to play.

In the fourth quarter, Alfreda Potter (Carroll Christian High School) would lead the Cardinals comeback charge, making a jump shot with just 18 seconds off the clock. A free throw from Lauryn Russell would see the Cardinals deficit shrink to four points with eight minutes left to go. Unfortunately, the Cardinals comeback efforts would fall short, as the Cardinals would lose 64-50.

The leading scorer for the Cardinals was Lauryn Russell, who finished with 16 points. Kayla Cabbagestalk (Chesapeake High School) finished with six points to go along with 15 rebounds on the night. Off the bench, Ah'niya Tillery would finish with 10 points.

The Cardinals are now 9-10. Their next game is away against Union County College on February 18 at 2pm.
