Cardinals Keep Winning Streak Alive with Fifth Straight Mercy Rule Win

CCBC Catonsville's softball team kept their winning streak alive on Wednesday, defeating Hagerstown Community College 9-1 by way of mercy rule.

It was the fifth-straight mercy rule win for the Cardinals, whose streak traces back to their defeat of Christendom last Tuesday.

Catonsville opened the scoring in the first when sophomore outfielder Mackenzie Brooks (Hammond) hit a sac-fly into center field, bringing home freshman shortstop Morhgan Gross (Howard). Brooks would be responsible for the next score as well as she singled in the bottom of the third, bringing home sophomore outfielder Abigail Heagy (Eastern Tech). Leading 2-0, the Cardinals doubled the lead when freshman designated player Madelyn Golt (George Washington Carver) doubled down the right field line, making it 4-0. Golt then scored on a single from freshman second baseman Katie Weaver (Eastern Tech) to make the score 5-0.

Catonsville continued to add on runs in the fourth. A single from Heagy brought home Gross making it 6-0. Catonsville then extended the lead further with a single from Brooks that scored Heagy. Up 7-1 in the sixth, the Cardinals iced the game off an RBI single from Gross and another sac-fly by Brooks. With Catonsville ahead by eight runs, it was game over for the Hawks.

Brooks finished the game with four RBIs including her two sac-flies. Gross added an RBI and a double, while Heagy had two doubles and an RBI. Golt had an excellent game, recording a double and two RBIs. Freshman pitcher Kayleigh Rishel (Leonardtown) finished the afternoon with six strikeouts.
