Turner, Catamounts beat Northern Virginia

Turner, Catamounts beat Northern Virginia

Keyser, W.Va. – Alexis Turner led all scorers with 23 points to pace Potomac State College over Northern Virginia Community College, 69 -47 Saturday afternoon at Lough Gymnasium. Her strong offensive performance included 8-15 shooting from the floor, 1-3 from three-point range and 6-9 from the foul line.

Despite the game-high offensive output, Turner and her Catamount teammates started slow and Northern Virginia, behind efficient field goal shooting, crept out to an early 19-15 lead after the first period. NOVA shot 8-15 from the floor in the first period compared to 5-17 field goal shooting for the Catamounts.

The Catamounts forced a drastic momentum change in the second quarter. A higher energy defense would hold the Nighthawks to a total of eight points for the quarter. Meanwhile, Turner would find her rhythm offensively, hitting 4-6 field goals and 4-5 free throws for 12 points. Potomac State scored 20 points overall to hold a 35-27 halftime advantage.

Northern Virginia were able to slow the Catamount attack in the third quarter and hold Potomac State to five field goals on 19 attempts. The Nighthawks held a 17-13 scoring advantage in the third period and narrowed the PSC lead to 48-44 entering the final stanza.

The fourth quarter was all Catamounts. The Potomac State defense would smother the worn-down Nighthawk squad, holding them to only three points. Meanwhile, an efficient offensive attack would post 21 points closing out the 69-47 win.

Jaimalyn Ash had 15 points and Danijah Allen had 11 points to join Turner in double figures for the Catamounts. Allen also had a game-high 15 rebounds.

The Nighthawks were led by Ciarra Owen with 15 points and Charlotte Donnellan with 12 points.

Potomac State closes the regular season with a 10-9 record. They await the pairings for the NJCAA Region XX Tournament to be held March 5th thru March 8th at Howard Community College.  The pairings are scheduled to be announced by 5 p.m. Sunday.
