Seahawks Drop Two in Season Opener

Seahawks Drop Two in Season Opener

GEORGETOWN, Del. - Cecil baseball's opening day did not go as they would have hoped, as the Seahawks dropped both sides of a doubleheader to Delaware Tech on Saturday.

Game 1 - Delaware Tech 7, Cecil 3 - Box Score

The Seahawks struggled with runners in scoring position, as Cecil's offense left 21 runners on base in the opening contest.

Delaware Tech recieved most of its offense early, plating six runs over the first three innings. The Seahawks stretched its offense over three innings, scoring one run in each. Delaware Tech's final run came in the sixth, then the home team shut out Cecil in the seventh to earn the win.

Four Seahawks accounted for eight of Cecil's nine hits. Highlighting the bunch was Justin Cordero, who earned the Seahawks first home run of 2023. Elsewhere, Davis Jenkins collected two doubles while Dylan Byler doubled once.

On the mound, Vinnie Kershner (0-1) was stuck with the loss. He struck out five over 4 2/3 innings. Kevin Gamber allowed one run on two hits in relief.

Game 2 - Delaware Tech 7, Cecil 6 - Box Score

Despite a strong showing in the late innings, Cecil's comeback attempt fell short in game two.

The Seahawks allowed Delaware Tech another strong start, as the home team grabbed a trio of runs in the first. After a scoreless second frame, Delaware Tech snagged four runs over the next two innings while Cecil plated just one. The Seahawks bats started to heat up in the fifth (one run), then exploded in the sixth for four more. This ultimately left Cecil trailing by a run that they never found.

Sael Flete had an excellent day at the dish, collected three hits and an RBI in five at-bats. Four other Seahawks chipped in one hit each.

On the mound, Joel Blanco (0-1) was tagged with the defeat. He chaired three batters in 3 1/3 innings of work. Rafael Solano looked good out of the pen, allowing just one hit over 2 2/3 innings.
