Union Women's Soccer Wins Season Opener in 2OT; Fernandez With Game Winner

ANNAPOLIS, MD - It took 102 minutes to decide a winner and Victoria Fernandez late goal was the game winner for the Union women's soccer team in their 2-1 season opening victory.

Union took a 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Lindsay Wielgus in the 17th minute.  The 1-0 advantage to Union would carry into halftime.  In the second half Anne Arundel would score in the 46th minute to tie the score at one.  That score would stand into the second overtime when freshman Fernandez would find the back of the net for the game winner.  Union would out shoot Anne Arundel 21-7.  Sophomore goalkeeper Destine Alarcon had four saves on the day for the Owls.  Head Coach Angie Correia said "I'm gald we got the win, but we had too many opportunities that we did not capitalize on.  We need to execute much better."

Union is next in action on Friday, August 30 when they travel to LaPlata, MD to face the College of Southern Maryland for a 1:00pm kickoff.
