Men’s Soccer Season Opener Ends In 3-3 Tie Against Frederick

The Prince George's Community College men's soccer team saw their first game action of the 2023 season on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to take on Frederick Community College for a 4:30 PM match. The Owls came out strong, building a 2-0 lead by the 20th minute after goals from freshman Johnny Sesay in the 7th and returner Francis Ogbankwa in the 18th. Teammates Dave Corvera and Muhammed Sallah provided the assist on the first goals of the season.

Prince George's surrendered a goal in the 27th minute to head into halftime with a 2-1 lead before allowing the Cougars to tie things up, 2 a piece with a goal in the 57th. Coach Mansaray and his squad responded quickly just moments later with their third goal of the contest, this time from freshman Jose Flores who was assisted by Oluwafolayemi "Victor" Ojo. In control by one, the Owls mostly held Frederick in check, allowing just three shots over the next 27 minutes. Goalkeeper Bilal Odeh was able to stop the first two but the Cougars final shot of the game got past the sophomore keeper in the closing minutes, knotting things up at 3 in the 87th minute.

A pair of corner kicks from Prince George's threatened Frederick late but the Owls were unable to get a good look on goal as the final whistle sounded, signaling a 3-3 tie.

After the game Coach Mansaray was excited with his team in their first outing of the season, especially early on when they came out hungry and were able to build up a 2-0 lead. He admitted that the first game of the season is always a test and is a good gauge to see where the team needs to focus their attention for the season ahead.

The Owls will get another crack at it on Thursday when they host College of Southern Maryland at 5 PM. The Hawks enter the matchup with a 1-3 record which includes a 4-3 loss to Frederick a week prior. Prince George's is seeking its first win against Southern Maryland since the 2019 season when the Owls toppled the visiting Hawks 3-2 in extra minutes.
