Skipjacks Come Up Short Against Hagerstown, 70-60

The Chesapeake College men's basketball program returned home to Skipjack Arena on Tuesday, November 21st to battle Hagerstown Community College in the team's Maryland JUCO opener. Coming off their first win of the year a week prior against Community College of Allegheny County, the Skipjacks were looking to build on their momentum in front of a home crowd but were unable to do so as they couldn't overcome an early deficit, ultimately falling to the Hawks, 70-60.

Chesapeake trailed for the entirety of the game after a slow start put the team behind by double digits early on at the 14:15 mark and later entered halftime down ten, 35-25. The Skipjacks Kyle Jones led the team in scoring at the break with 7 points, all of which came from made free throws (7/8). Playing from behind, Chesapeake fired off 14 three's as they attempted to close the gap but could not get the lid off the basket, hitting on just 1 of 14 attempts in the first half.

The Skipjacks came out in the second on the right foot, hitting their first two shots to cut the Hawks lead to just five but Hagerstown quickly separated themselves and moments later Chesapeake found themselves trailing by 17 with under ten to play. The Skipjacks managed to stay within striking distance as time ticked away but ultimately fell to Division I Hagerstown and fall to 1-5 on the season.

Andre Stewart again finished as the leading scorer for Chesapeake with 17 points and added 8 rebounds but committed 7 costly turnovers. Teammate Kyle Jones followed up with12 points and 8 boards as well.

Chesapeake will have some time off surrounding the Thanksgiving break before returning to play Frederick Community College on Wednesday, November 29th for another home game in Skipjack Arena. Tip is set for 7 PM.
