ROCHESTER, NY - In a commanding home performance, the #14-ranked Monroe Community College defeated Prince George's Community College with a final score of 65-52. A balanced offensive attack and a strong rebounding presence allowed Monroe to maintain control throughout the game.
First Half:
Monroe started strong, building a 34-24 halftime lead. Key contributions came from guard Alan Garcia (Bronx, NY), who scored 9 points on 4-of-6 shooting, and forward Jaheem Tyson (Brooklyn, NY), who added 4 points and 5 rebounds in the first half. Monroe's defense was clinical, holding Prince George's to just 33.3% shooting and forcing nine turnovers.
Despite some struggles from beyond the arc (2-of-15 in the half), Monroe's aggressive rebounding, led by Denarius McCurty's (Syracuse, NY) five boards, allowed the Tribunes to capitalize on second-chance opportunities.
Second Half:
In the second half, Monroe's offensive efficiency improved, shooting 45.5% from the field. Tyson continued his dominance in the paint, finishing with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Latrell Mark (Frederick, MD) stepped up with 9 second-half points, including 5-of-6 free throws, ensuring Monroe maintained its lead.
The Tribunes also showcased their defensive prowess, with 14 total steals, led by Mark's 4. Their ability to limit Prince George's three-point attempts (2-of-19) was crucial in stifling any comeback attempts. A key performer was Omar White (Brooklyn, NY), who led the team in minutes (31) and contributed 10 points and 6 rebounds.
Monroe improves to 5-1 and continues to solidify its top-15 ranking. It will be important for the team to build on this momentum and continue to improve as they won't return to Monagn Court until after the new year.
