Lady Skipjacks Start Off The New Year With A Big Win Over Potomac State

Chesapeake College's women's basketball returned to Skipjack Arena for the first time in over a month on Wednesday, January 15th to take on Potomac State College in a Region 20 matchup. The contest also marked the first game of the new year for the Skipjacks who last played Wednesday, December 18th at CCBC Essex which ended in a loss for Chesapeake. Looking to start the new year off on the right foot and erase their last game from memory, Chesapeake wasted no time in their 87-66 dismantling over Potomac State. With the victory, the Skipjacks improve to 11-3 on the year while the Catamounts fall to 4-5.

The Skipjacks quickly took control of a game in which Chesapeake never trailed as they built up a 9-0 lead over the first minute and a half of action and never looked back. The Skipjacks held the Catamounts to just 23 points in the first half while pouring in 22 and 26 points in the first two periods on their way to building a comfortable 48-23 lead. Sophomore guard Jahnaya Peterson led all scorers at the break with 15 points for the Skipjacks.

Entering the third period with the game essentially already put away, the Skipjacks were able to slow the game down and focus on their shots which resulted in a highly efficient three point shooting percentage (3-5) in the period. Sophomores Janice Brown (6 rebounds) and Breyonna Seymour (5 points, 5 rebounds) controlled the glass for the Skipjacks to keep the game out of reach for the Catmounts.

Leading 66-43 at the start of the final period, sophomore Brooke Worrell took over for the Skipjacks as she poured in 11 of her 18 total points during the final 10 minute stretch to help secure the 87-66 victory for Chesapeake. Three different Skipjacks scored in double digits with Peterson leading the way with 23 points to go along with 7 rebounds. Chesapeake will look to keep rolling when they host the College of Southern Maryland on Friday, January 17th at 5 pm.
