Pitching Helps Secure 4-1 Week

Leesburg, Fla. – After a recent skid, the Lake-Sumter State College baseball team turned it on this past week winning 4 out of 5 contests.

Community College of Baltimore County made the spring trip to Florida on Monday to take on the Lakehawks. After trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the second inning, LSSC rolled the bats out and went to town with a three-run bottom half. They never looked back totaling 11 runs on 17 hits in the 11-4 win. Jake Janata improved to 2-0 after tossing five solid innings. Kobie Leonard, Naphis Llanos and Brandon Riehm collected three hits each in the win. Gabriel Dorsey went 2 for 4 with two doubles on the day.

South Florida also made their way to LSSC to finish up their series. In their previous meeting this season, SFSC won, 8-5. The results were a little different this time around. Lake-Sumter opened up the game with a five-run first inning, before adding three more in the fifth. The pitching took it from there. Seth Wysocki got the start and went five innings, giving up just two runs while striking out two. The bullpen made up of Parker Grahe, Nick Donatucci and Easton Jackson worked a combined four innings and allowed just two runners to reach base. Wysocki (2-0) earned the win in the 8-2 victory.

The bats were plentiful for LSSC against Inspiration Academy on Friday to the tune of 20 runs scored in seven innings. Cameron Rodriguez went 2-2 at the dish with a double and four RBI's. Markantony Perez was also involved in the doubles game snagging his third of the season. Matthew Taubensee worked four innings and collected his first win of the season from the mound.

Saturday and Sunday meant a home/away series with St. Pete College. Saturday was the home portion for Lake-Sumter as they suffered their only loss of the week, 3-1. Pitcher, Matt Paulo was the tough luck loser in this low scoring affair. The LSSC offense was quiet with just one run on two hits in the ball game. Mickey Skole drove in their only run with a double.

One of the best things about baseball, is you won't have to wait long to get back on the field. In this case, less than 24 hours later, the same two teams were at it again. This time, in St. Petersburg. LSSC took advantage of early scoring opportunities taking a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Titans managed a three-run sixth, but could not comeback from the deficit with the Lakehawks taking the game, 7-4. Ian Brown and Leonard led the way with two hits apiece. Brown totaled three RBI's in the victory. The team as a whole managed to swipe eight bases on the day. Janata (3-0) tossed 5.1 innings to earn his second victory of the week.

Baseball (10-7) will be back home Monday against Hillsborough Community College. Start time slated for 3 pm.
