Heagy's Two Homeruns Lead Cardinals to First Home Win

The CCBC Catonsville Cardinals were untouchable in their home opener, defeating Brookdale Community College 6-1.

Behind two home runs from sophomore outfielder Abigail Heagy (Eastern Tech), the Cardinals cruised to an easy victory amid frigid temperatures.

Catonsville struck first in the bottom of the first when Heagy smacked a home run past the left field fence, bringing herself and freshman shortstop Morhgan Gross (Howard) home for a 2-0 lead.

The following two innings were quiet, save for a bases-loaded situation in the top of the second that freshman pitcher Kayleigh Rishel (Leonardtown) escaped. The Cardinals would extend their lead in the bottom of the fourth when freshman second baseman Madelyn Golt (George Washington Carver) scored on a wild pitch. With two on base, Heagy stepped to the plate and delivered again, sending another home run out of the park. This extended the lead to 6-0.

The remainder of the game saw a dominant pitching display from Rishel who pitched a complete game, only allowing a single run in the top of the seventh.

"I'm very proud of what we accomplished today," said Heagy after the game. "We did a great job of working together, executing plays, and showing the things we worked on at practice".

The win moves the Cardinals to 4-4 on the season.
