UConn at Avery Point rallies late to down the Cardinals

CATONSVILLE, Md. – The CCBC Catonsville baseball came up short against University of Connecticut at Avery Point, 12-7 on Monday afternoon, snapping a two-game winning streak for the Cardinals.

LINE SCORE: Pointers (1-6) 12, Cardinals (9-9) 7, WP- Jack Dimatteo (1-0), LP- Nick Carpio (0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

• After the Pointers hit a solo home run in the top of the first, the Cardinals batted around in the first inning, scoring five runs in the first frame, led by a two-run single off the bat of Hunter Todd.
• In the bottom of the second inning, Zeke Maldonado hit a ball deep straight center to extend the lead for the Cardinals.
• The Cardinals went into the fourth inning with a 7-1 lead, the Pointers took advantage of some errors in the field by the Cardinals to tie the game in the fifth inning.
• The struggles in the field continued for the Cardinals as the Pointers scored their eighth run of the game on an error, which was the game winning run for the Pointers, who snap a six-game losing skid to get their first win of the season.
• The Pointers extended their lead with four runs in the eighth to take command of the game and went on to win 12-7.

STANDOUT STATS

• Despite being charged with the loss, Nick Carpio was outstanding in his three runs of relief. The Altamonte Springs, Florida native came into the fifth inning with the bases loaded and no outs, but he was able to get a quick fly out and a double play to escape the inning.
• Carpio gave up no hits and no earned runs in his three innings in relief, the only run that scored with him on the mound was scored on an error, but he falls to 0-1 on the season.
• Hunter Todd drove in three runs to move to third on the team with 12 on the season.
• Tyler Green started the game for the Cardinals, he fanned seven during his four-inning start.
