Game 2
College of Southern Maryland
In a wild contest, the CCBC Catonsville Cardinals softball team erased a 5-3 deficit with ten unanswered runs, taking their tenth mercy-rule victory in twelve games.
With the 13-5 victory over Southern Maryland, the Cardinals keep themselves alive in the race for the Region XX crown.
The Cardinals struck first in a bizarre way, as freshman designated player Madelyn Golt (Carver) was walked in a bases-loaded situation. Southern Maryland took their first lead of the contest in the top of the second, only for the Cardinals to respond in the bottom of the third. A home run for sophomore outfielder Mackenzie Brooks (Hammond) gave Catonsville a 3-2 lead.
Southern Maryland kept the contest close, taking the lead back in the top of the fifth. Trailing 5-3, the Cardinals erupted in the bottom of the fifth. After freshman third baseman Tori Bache (Northeast) homered over the left-field fence, freshman outfielder Mimi Truong (Western Tech) hit a two-RBI triple to give the Cardinals a 6-5 lead. Catonsville didn't stop there, as Truong scored on an error, and freshman shortstop Morhgan Gross (Howard) hit an RBI triple.
Now leading 8-5, the Cardinals kept the pressure up in the sixth. Freshman second baseman Katie Weaver (Eastern Tech) hit an RBI double to begin the inning, bringing the score to 9-5. After freshman outfielder Mattie Brack (Our Lady of Mount Carmel) scored on a wild pitch, sophomore first baseman Felicity Voss (Catonsville) singled to right field, bringing home two more runs. A single from sophomore outfielder Mackenzie Brooks (Hammond) that brought home Voss ended the contest via mercy rule.
Gross finished the contest with a triple and an RBI. Weaver hit two doubles and an RBI. Truong had an excellent performance, scoring two RBIs, a triple, and a stolen base. Brooks had three RBIs and a home run, while Bache hit a home run and recorded an RBI.
