Lady Skipjacks Continue Conference Dominance With Win Over Cecil College

Chesapeake College's women's basketball team returned to Skipjack Arena Friday, December 6th to finish off their week of conference play when the Skipjacks hosted Cecil College. Chesapeake would take down the Seahawks 82-63 to improve to 8-2 on the season, including 4-0 in conference play. Meanwhile Cecil College fell to 2-2 overall, 1-1 in MD JUCO.

Fresh off of a dominant 110-38 victory over Anne Arundel Community College earlier in the week, the Skipjacks came out flat to start off against Cecil's Seahawks, scoring just 6 points over the first 5:29 of play. Fortunately for Chesapeake, they were able to hold Cecil to a single point over that same stretch and continued to disrupt their shooters for the remainder of the first half. The Skipjacks held Cecil to just 17 points in the half while allowing them to connect on only 7 shots from the floor which equated to less than a 23 percent success rate for the Seahawks. Sophomore guard Brooke Worrell led all scorers at the break with 16 points as the Skipjacks entered halftime leading 41-17.

The Seahawks made some effective adjustments during halftime as they came out hot to open the third period, scoring 31 points on 50 percent shooting to put some pressure on the Skipjacks. Chesapeake was able to respond with 21 points of their own in the period to hold off any real threat of a Seahawks comeback attempt after building a 24 point cushion in the first two periods. The Skipjacks closed out the final period outscoring the Seahawks 20-15 to secure the 82-63 victory. Chesapeake never trailed for the entirety of the game and led by as many as 30 points near the end of the second period.

Four different Skipjack players finished with double digit points as Worrell leading the way with 28. Sophomore forward Brittiney Seymour recorded a double-double in the win with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Chesapeake currently sits atop MD JUCO's rankings for women's basketball with their next conference matchup coming up December 18th when the Skipjacks travel to CCBC Essex to take on the Knights who are in their first year back as a program in 15 years. Awaiting the team before the Skipjacks continue conference play is an away weekend in North East, MD beginning Saturday December 14th against ASA's Brooklyn Avengers. Chesapeake will enjoy the week off to focus on their game before closing out the 2019 portion of their season.
