Lakers softball sweeps Potomac State

Sunday, the Lady Lakers (16-12) played host to the Potomac State Catamounts. The Lakers won game one behind the strong pitching tandem of McKailyn Woodward and Sydney Aey. The pair combined to allow one earned run while striking out 11. The Lakers managed six hits while committing three errors in the contest but still were able to walk away with a 6-3 win. The offensive highlights for the Lakers include an RBI single by Shardonay Miller, a home run from Laura Matso following a Sydney Aey single, and an Emily Woods sacrifice fly. Six of the nine Lakeland starters had one hit.

In game two, Abbe Mowrer started on the mound and picked up the win pitching 4.2 innings allowing two runs while striking out six batters. She was also two for three at the plate picking up an RBI and scoring a run. Sydney Aey pitched the final 2.1 innings allowing an unearned run while striking out three. The Lakers started this game out strong scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Justine Barnes doubled to start the inning and went to third on a sacrifice from Jamie Matso. Emily Woods then knocked her in with a run scoring single. After a Mowrer single, a passed ball scored Woods. Aey then singled Mowrer home. Later in the inning, Dane Scoville hit a fielder's choice which got Aey at second base before she scored on a long double from Laura Matso.

The Lakers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second inning as Amber Leiderbach got it going with a lead-off double. Following a Justine Barnes single, Leiderbach scored on a Jamie Matso sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Abbe Mowrer plated Barnes with a single. With a 6-0 lead after two, the Lakers cruised to a 7-3 victory. In an interesting note, six different Lakeland starters had one RBI in this game.

The Lakers will play host to University of Northwestern Ohio (JV) Tuesday (4/25) in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader. Lakeland will then travel to Cuyahoga Wednesday (4/26) and Notre Dame College (JV) Friday (4/28). Both of those dates will start at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, the Lakers will travel to Genesee for a 2 p.m. twin bill. Sunday's games at Erie CC have been cancelled.
