Riverhawks Fall to Butler in Region XX Tournament

ARNOLD, MD – Anne Arundel Community College was host to the 2016 NJCAA Division III Region XX Women's Volleyball Tournament from October 28-29, with the Riverhawks at the No. 4 seed.  Also entered in the tournament was (No. 1) Butler County Community College, (No. 2) Howard Community College, and (No. 3) Montgomery College.

 

As the No. 4 seed, the Riverhawks were faced with a tough first match-up against the No. 1 seeded Pioneers of Butler County Community College.  The Pioneers proved their No. 1 seed ranking with a strong performance, defeating the Riverhawks, 3-0, (25-16, 25-10, 25-12).  With Howard defeating Montgomery, it was Butler County Community College vs. Howard Community College in the Championship game on Saturday October 29.  The Pioneers out of Butler, PA took the NJCAA DIII Region XX Championship with a 3-0 win over the Dragons of Howard, (25-22, 29-27, 25-17). 

 

Butler's Region XX Championship win advanced the Pioneers to face the Region XII Champion – Columbus State Community College, for the NJCAA DIII District G Championship, held at AACC on Sunday October 30. The Cougars of Columbus State gave the Pioneers their third loss of the season and claimed the District G Championship title with a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-19, 25-15).

 

For their tournament performances, sophomore Nicolette Powell (St. Augustine, FL/South River) and freshman Kathryn Hawes (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) were named to the 2016 Region XX Division III All-Tournament Team.

 

The Riverhawks' season concluded with their tournament loss to Butler, finishing them at 4-13 on the season (3-8 conference).
