Hawks top Dragons, look towards region rivalry

The Hawks, currently 7-6 overall, won Monday's matchup against the Howard Community College Dragons, 95-86. Freshman guard, Hassan Perkins, Wilmington, DE, was leading scorer with 33 points, shooting 11-17, with 7 assists, 3 steals and 4 rebounds. The Hawks shot 57.1% as a team, with 14 total assists, making 17 out of 19 free throws. Defensively, Hagerstown pulled down 14 rebounds and had a combined team total of 10 steals. "Overall, we played well as a team after losing to Frederick on Saturday," commented Head Coach, Bernard Hopkins. "From the first tip, through the first half, we remained totally focused and together. We maintained focus throughout the second half, battled through lead changes up until the final five minutes of the game, and took control for the win."

Tonight's game, versus Allegany College of MD (9-2), in a mixer hosted by Garrett College, Mc Henry, MD, will be the first season meeting between the Hawks and the Trojans. A long-standing Region 20 rivalry going back to the 1980s, games played between Hagerstown and Allegany have drawn large crowds and interest, and often have been the season determining factor for qualifying in post season play. This year's path to the NJCAA National Men's Basketball Championship tournament starts with the Region 20/East District tournament on March 14th and 15th, in Cumberland, MD hosted by Allegany College. Monroe College, the single DI school in Region 15 and Harcum College, the single DI school in Region 19 with be combined in the tournament with Region 20 schools, Hagerstown, Allegany, Harford CC, and Baltimore City CC to determine who moves on to Hutchinson, KS, March 24-20, 2024.

With the HCC campus closing on December 20th, the Hawks will be off on winter break until they travel to Raleigh, NC over December 28th & 29th to play Caldwell Community College and Wake Tech in the Wake Tech Holiday Classic.

January holds a long run of home games for the Hawks beginning on Saturday, January 13th, when the Montgomery College Raptors come to town for a 3:30 p.m. tip off at the ARCC.
