Big Offense Powers Softball to Sweep

LA PLATA, MD — The softball team of Richard Bland College swept the College of Southern Maryland on the road on Sunday behind the momentum of an offense locked in at the plate. 

The team moves to 4-2 this year with the 2020 season now moving into full gear. Next weekend the Statesmen will face off against Monroe College out of New York in a three game series over Saturday and Sunday. This series will be the first home games of the season for RBC. There will be a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 & 3 PM with the third game being on Sunday at 12:30 PM. 

Game 1

The first game of the doubleheader against Southern Maryland saw the team pull away with some big offense towards the end of the game. Starting things off the for the Statesmen, Madison Kelly tripled in the first inning to bring home 1 run and would later tag up to score on a sacrifice fly from Kiara Toler. Southern Maryland would tie things up after the bottom half of the first and the teams would play a tied contest until the third inning. In the third the bats came alive for RBC as the team drove 7 runs across the plate.  In the inning, Rachel Watson doubled, Jamie Fields singled, Toler doubled, and Madison Rice singled, all scoring runs. The team would then tack on two mores runs from Teri Jackson and Jackie Westfall in the top of the fifth inning to make the final score 11-2. 

Kiara Toler did it both on the mound and at the plate today as she went 4 innings, giving up 2 Earned Runs and striking out 5, while she went 2 for 4 at the plate with 4 RBI and 2 Runs. Madison Kelley went a perfect 4 for 4 on the game with 1 RBI and 2 Runs and Jamie Fields went 3 for 3 with 1 RBI and 2 Runs. 

Game 2

With the first game in the books, the team went back on the field for the second half of the doubleheader.  The Statesmen did not take long to get on the board as Madison Rice knocked her first home run of the season on a 2-1 count, driving in herself and another run. Teri Jackson would add another run as she steals home on a big double steal that paid off to make it 3-0, RBC.  RBC would erupt again for another 7 run inning in the fourth inning as Jamie Fields, Madison Kelley, Rice, Jackson, and Rachel Watson would all drive in runs at the plate. CSM would only score two runs in the bottom half of the first and fifth as Watson was locked in inside the circle.

Watson went 4 innings, giving up only 1 Run on 2 Hits and struck out 9 batters. Madison Rice was the top batter at the plate in the second game as she went 3 for 3 including the big homer with 3 RBI and 2 Runs. Madison Kelley would go 2 for 2 with 2 RBI and 2 Runs.
