Women’s Soccer Bout with Anne Arundel Ends in a Draw

The College of Southern Maryland Hawks women's soccer team's game against the Anne Arundel Community College Riverhawks ended in a 1-1 draw on October 3.

Freshman midfielder/defender Zoi Whitsett did a great job pushing the ball into Anne Arundel territory for two shot on goal opportunities early in the first half. Whitsett ended the game leading the Hawks in shots with three.

Anne Arundel countered with their own possessions and scoring opportunities, eventually leading to a goal in the 17th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

In the 49th minute, CSM got on the board with a penalty kick goal by freshman midfielder/forward Megan Hinton - CSM's leading goal scorer - to knot things up 1-1. Whitsett sent a service into the penalty box where Hinton gained possession of the ball before being taken down by a Riverhawk defender. Hinton has now converted three penalty kicks this year.

Sophomore defender/midfielder Brooke Portzen was active all game on the back line, disrupting shots and clogging up passing lanes, making it hard for Anne Arundel to get good looks on offense.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Cox finished the game with five saves after coming in late in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper/defender Natalie Schiavone did a great job starting off in the net for the Hawks as she finished with four saves on five shots.

CSM's record stands at 5-3-2 overall and 3-1-2 in Region 20 Division II.
