Goretti advances to BCL final

St. Maria Goretti 64, Mount St. Joseph 54

BALTIMORE — For the third time this season, St. Maria Goretti defeated Mount St. Joseph, this time pushing the winning Gaels into the Baltimore Catholic League championship game at Loyola University.

Goretti (28-6) will go against St. Frances Academy at 1 p.m. Sunday, shooting for its first BCL tournament title since 2001.

RJ Blakney came up big with a double-double, scoring 29 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. James Searcy had 13 points and Rahsaan Edwards added 11.

Goretti led a 22-13 after the first period but MSJ came back to forge a 29-all tie at the half. However, Goretti came out steaming in the third quarter on a 12-0 run to go up 41-29 in the first 2:30 of play.

St. Joseph’s James Bishop, the BCL player of the year, had nine points in a run that closed the gap to 43-41 after three quarters.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Goretti was up 53-44 on a pair of free throws by Edwards and Blakney kept Goretti in front with six points in the last two minutes.

In the regular season, Goretti lost twice to St. Frances, 57-52 and 62-58.

Allegany 71, Hancock 63

HANCOCK — Jackson Bauer scored 22 points, Jordan Fazzalore added 21 and the Campers took over in the second half to beat the Panthers in the 1A West Section I quarterfinals Friday night.

Justice Allen had 21 points and 11 rebounds and Brady Souders scored 12 points for Hancock (11-11), which led 30-27 at halftime.

Berlin 69, Southern Fulton 56

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — Isaac Fitz had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists for Southern Fulton in a District 5 consolation loss to Berlin Brothersvalley on Friday.

Josh Morris had 12 points, Justin Morris had nine points and five assists and Gabe Stotler had seven points and four rebounds for the Indians (15-10), who trailed by two points at halftime before Berlin went on a 10-0 run to start the third quarter.

Broadfording 47, Cornerstone 25

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Telma Einarsdottir had 22 points, 12 rebounds and four steals to lead Broadfording Christian past Cornerstone Christian (N.Y.) in the National Christian School Tournament on Friday.

Broadfording led 13-8 after the first quarter and held Cornerstone scoreless in the second to take a 21-8 lead into the half.

Tillie Derr had 13 points, 16 rebounds and three assists, Alani White had nine points, five rebounds and three steals and Edy Colliflower had four steals for the Lions.

Walkersville 35, Williamsport 22

WALKERSVILLE, Md. — Chidera Ogwalu scored 10 points for Walkersville as the Lions eliminated Williamsport in a Maryland 2A West Section II quarterfinal Friday.

Williamsport led 8-3 after the first quarter but was held scoreless in the second and trailed 14-8 at the half.

Walkersville extended its lead in the third quarter, outscoring Williamsport 15-7 in the frame.

Jordan Yeakle had 10 points and four rebounds for the Wildcats (12-11).

Saint James drops a pair

CUMBERLAND, Md. — In its visit to the 25th Bishop Walsh Invitational Tournament, Saint James will hope to garner a win Saturday after losses Thursday and Friday.

In a consolation game at 1 p.m., the Saints will meet Bishop Walsh.

The Saints (19-6) lost 63-28 to McDonogh School on Friday after falling 70-55 to Bishop McNamara on Thursday..

Against McDonogh, Morgan Moseley had nine points and four rebounds and Gabby Grantham-Medley had six points and 12 rebounds.

Against Bishop McNamara, Moseley had 14 points, six rebounds and three assists, Grantham-Medley scored 14 points, Skylar Treadwell had 10 points and Morgan McMahon added eight points.

Northern Garrett 28, Hancock 13

ACCIDENT, Md. — Neither team had much offense in this Maryland 1A West Section I quarterfinal as Hancock ended the season at 9-11.

• COLLEGE BASEBALL

HCC 4, Muskegon 1

VERO BEACH, Fla. — Hagerstown Community College enjoyed the Florida weather in a season-opening victory Friday over Muskegon (Mich.).

Josh Colliflower and Ryan Green combined on a two-hitter with Colliflower getting the winning on three innings of work, allowing only an unearned run. Green settled in for the save over the final four innings, allowing one hit and striking out five.

The Hawks scored two of their runs on first-and-third double steals, one coming in the fourth inning. The other run came on an RBI single by Jaden Weida as HCC gained a 3-1 lead.

Austin Moser had two hits and scored two runs for the Hawks.
