CSM’s Late Buckets Lead Hawks over WAU (JV)

In a back-and-forth affair, the College of Southern Maryland Hawks men's basketball team squeezed by the Washington Adventist University (JV) Shock late by a score of 86-83 on November 8 in La Plata, Maryland.

Sophomore Darius Fletcher led the way for the Hawks in scoring with 23 points on 8-14 shooting to go along with three assists and two steals. CSM had four of their five starters score in double figures en route to their second home victory of the 2023-24 campaign. Sophomore Reggie Washington had 16 points, and sophomore Magic Hewlett secured a double-double with his 11 points and 11 points.

Early in the first half, both teams were trading buckets. CSM struggled early getting defensive rebounds, which allowed WAU to cash in on second chance points. WAU led 38-30 with about three and a half minutes left in the first half before CSM would go on a run, outscoring the Shock 18-10 the rest of the way to make it 48-48 at the half.

In the second half, CSM upped their defensive intensity, forcing many early turnovers with their full-court pressure and traps, resulting in easy fast-break points. Leading that front was sophomore Ryan Blakey, who had nine steals go along with 21 points and five assists.
