Cardinals Dominate Lackawanna For First Win of Season

CCBC Catonsville's women's basketball team picked up their first victory of the season on Thursday, dominating the Falcons of Lackawanna in a 67-44 victory.

Catonsville led the entire contest, had three players score in double-digits, and held Lackawanna to just a 26.2% shooting percentage. The Cardinals' defense allowed just one three-pointer on 23 attempts, locking down the Falcons and forcing them to play physically.

The evening began with an impressive 25-4 first quarter for the Cardinals. Freshman guard Ah'niya Tillery (Coppin Academy) scored 11 points in the first as the Cardinals ran out to leads of 13-2 and 19-4. The defense showed promise in particular, recording seven rebounds and three steals.

The second quarter saw much of the same, as the Cardinals continued to dominate defensively. Seven more defensive rebounds and four steals were added by the Cardinals, while freshman guard Lauryn Russell (Pallotti) came off the bench to knock down two three-pointers. Heading into the half, Catonsville led convincingly 39-17.

The Cardinals picked up where they had left off in the third, clamping down on Lackawanna's shooters and recording key defensive stops. The defense grabbed eight more rebounds and three steals, while Catonsville's bench added 12 points. Sophomore guard Destiny Perry (Sparrows Point) was perfect from the free-throw line, adding six points to the total.

Although they were outscored 16-7 in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals didn't need to do much as they closed out the 67-44 win.

Tillery finished as the leading scorer for the Cardinals with 15 points, while Perry added 12 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Russell finished the evening with 12 points off the bench, and freshman guard Kayla Cabbagestalk (Chesapeake) added six points, seven rebounds, and two assists.

The Cardinals' next game will be at home on November 11 against Middlesex College.
