LCCC Volleyball Drops Four Close Matches at Owens CC Invite

September 4, 2023 - - Lorain County Community College's volleyball team came up short in four matches at the Owens Community College Invitational over the weekend. Coming off their first win of the season against Lakeland Community College last Wednesday at home, the Commodores looked to pick up a couple of wins before returning to conference play this week.

Delta College

The Commodores opened the match with limited errors but couldn't get their offense rolling as they fell 3-0 to Delta College.  They connected for just eight kills against two errors and hit .176 in the opening frame.  LCCC rebounded to hit .333 as a team and smashed 14 kills in the third set but still lost 25-23.  Abbey Williams (North Ridgeville, Ohio/First Baptist Christian School) led the team in kills with 10, her second double-digit kill match of the season. Izabel Gallardo-Santo Domingo (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS) had 25 digs and Maggie Riley (Elyria, Ohio/Midview HS) turned in 26 assists in the weekend's first match.

St. Clair County Community College

In one of the Commodores closest matches of the weekend, they squandered a two set lead to the Clippers. After using overtime to take a 2-0 advantage, LCCC struggled over the next two sets despite getting double-digit kills from Josie Filice (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood HS) (15) and Riley (10), who also had 32 assists and 11 digs. LCCC hit .062 as a team in the deciding fifth set with six errors as the Clippers earned their third win of the season. Gallardo-Santo Domingo had 30 digs.

Hagerstown Community College

A back and forth affair where the Commodores, playing without Williams in Saturday's contests, took the second set against the Hawks and narrowly lost the third set in overtime (28-26) even with the Commodores hitting .214 and amassing 17 kills. They fell in the fourth set, 25-17. Nilaysia Todd (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) led LCCC with 12 kills with Filice adding 10.  Four Commodores turned in ten or more digs with Gallardo-Santo Domingo getting 37 while Riley had 17 digs coupled with 29 assists, Brianna Vidovich (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) had 16 digs, and Kylie Zocchi (Avon, Ohio/Avon HS) had 13.

Kellogg Community College

After falling in the opening two sets, The Commodores staved off defeat from Kellogg with a win in the third and nearly forced a fifth set before falling in overtime in set four (27-25).  Filice turned in 17 kills for LCCC and Riley had another all-around performance collecting 14 kills, 32 assists, and 13 digs for her second triple double of the weekend.

Riley had 119 assists while Gallardo-Santo Domingo had 126 digs total in the four matches.

The Commodores (1-5, 1-1) will travel to Cuyahoga Community College this Wednesday for another Ohio Community College Athletic Conference showdown starting at 6 p.m.  The Commodores swept the season series in 2022 with two victorious 5-set thrillers against the Triceratops.  Tri-C is 1-5 on the year and they picked up their first win of the season against Henry Ford Community College on Saturday, September 2.
