Men's Basketball Tops Hagerstown 70-55

Chesapeake College's men's basketball team returned to Skipjack Arena on Friday evening, January 24th to host Hagerstown Community College in a rematch of the Skipjacks 2019-2020 season opener. In the first meeting between the two teams back in early November, the Skipjacks were able to escape with an 84-76 victory in a tight contest. This time around, Chesapeake was able to take control in the second half as they earned a 70-55 victory to improve to 12-5 on the year, including 5-2 in Maryland JUCO play. Hagerstown's Hawks fall to 7-12, 2-6 MD JUCO.

Chesapeake was able to put together a 9-0 run early on in the first half to take a 17-10 lead which was sparked by a Mahzi Thames successful and-one conversion. Hagerstown was able to respond to the Skipjacks scoring for the remainder of the half as Chesapeake went into the break leading 31-27 after a Joey Adams three pointer with 11 seconds remaining. Thames led all scorers at the break with 12 points on 4 of 6 shooting from the floor.

Chesapeake came out slow to start the second half, missing three straight attempts from three point land as the Hawks took a slim 32-31 lead before Amir Pettiford put in a layup to regain the lead for the Skipjacks. Minutes later, Chesapeake went on a 13-0 run which included three successful shots from beyond the arc to redeem their poor stretch to begin the half.  Hagerstown was forced to use a timeout to stop the Skipjacks attack who now led 47-36. The Skipjacks were able to respond to any scoring the Hawks were able to generate and later went on a 7-0 run to take a commanding 17 point lead with under six minutes remaining. Despite playing in desperation mode, the Hawks were unable to come within 10 points of the Skipjacks over the closing minutes as the Chesapeake defense held strong, earning a 70-55 win.

Four different Skipjacks scored in double figures with Thames leading the way with 22 points while adding 5 assists, 3 steals, and 3 rebounds. Sophomore forward Amir Pettiford notched his fourth double-double of the year in the win with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Up next for the Skipjacks is an away game at CCBC Catonsville on Tuesday, January 28th in another Maryland JUCO contest.
