LCCC Women's Basketball Pulls Out OT Win

November 24, 2015 - The Lady Commodores of Lorain County Community College picked up another win Tuesday evening as they hosted Westmoreland County Community College in the Ewing Activities Center. In a tough defensive game, LCCC won 88-85 in overtime.

Match Recap
The start of the game was not in favor of the Lady Commodores as they struggled to get anything going. As WCCC tried to put their foot on the gas, the Commodores were able to hang around by visiting the charity line. LCCC made 9-10 free throws in just the first half and four of them came from Onyx Lopez; Onyx connected on 5-of-8 field goals to end the half with 14 points, three assists and three rebounds.

Along with Lopez, Brandi Holowecky contributed 12 points and 6 rebounds to keep LCCC in the game. In a back and forth first half, the Commodores were able to shoot above 45 percent from the field but they also allowed WCCC to shoot 49 percent as most came from second chances that resulted in easy put backs under the rim. Holowecky was able to end the half with a buzzer beater to put the Commodores up 40-36.

Much like the first half, LCCC came out sluggish to start the second half giving up easy buckets in the paint. With turnovers racking up (LCCC 23 on the night), Westmoreland was able to take a comfortable double digit lead in the third quarter. Unable to stop WCCC from making the deep ball, the Commodores found themselves still in the game by going to the free throw line once again.

With 3:47 remaining in the game, Madi Bonner (9 points, 5 rebounds) came up with a big 3 followed by another big shot by Molly Linn who ended her night with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Commodores were able to get to the lead down to just 4 with less than 20 seconds remaining; with a quick layup and a steal on the inbound, the Commodores took the game to overtime.

In overtime, the roles switched as LCCC knocked down their shots and WCCC remained in the game by going to the free throw line. With leading scorer Onyx Lopez (game high 35 points) on the bench after fouling out, the Commodores relied on their strong defense. After WCCC received a technical and LCCC missed their free throws, the Lady Commodores pulled out the win, stunning WCCC 88-85 in overtime.
