Sussex Defeated in District Tournament

The Sussex County Community College women's soccer team's season came to an end on Friday with a defeat to #12 nationally ranked CCBC-Essex 2-0.  In the first game of the Northeast District Tournament, the Skylanders did not make the most of their early opportunities and fell behind shortly after from a goal by Kara Dietrich, CCBC's leading goalscorer.  Dietrcih would add another goal in the second half as Sussex was pushing players forward for an equalizer, however, Sussex was unable to muster any clear cut chances from that moment onwards.  Head coach Frank Vernacchio was reflective of the season afterwards saying, "We did not take our opportunity tonight.  We had a great chance to move on to the next round with a good matchup in the first round.  Credit to CCBC Essex who out battled us today and followed their game plan.  Obviously we are upset with the result and now that our season is over, but there were a lot of positives from this season, and this team has really achieved a lot and helped create a stronger identity for our college and program.  Our coaching staff is extremely proud of our team, and we consider ourselves lucky to have had the opportunity to coach them."

Sussex had a remarkable season and broke several records.  Giovanna Castro tied the program's record for goals scored in a season (26) set by Gabby Sarni in 2016.  Sussex had their best record in a season since 2008 with an overall record of 14-2, compared to their 2008 record of 13-6.  They also broke school records for goals scored in a season and goals conceded with scoring 103 goals this year, the previous record was 2009 with 71, and conceding only 12, besting the record set in 2016 of 22.
