Women's Basketball: No. 9 Knights Snap Harford's Conference Streak, Win 67-63 on Road

Bel Air, Md. -- CCBC Essex trailed Harford by 19 points at halftime last night, but thanks to a 45-point second half the Knights snapped the Fighting Owls conference winning streak at 83 and handed the home team its first loss of the season with a 67-63 win at APG Federal Credit Union Arena. 

Coincidental, it was Essex's Mike Seney that started the streak when he led Harford (2014-2018). The Knights win over the Fighting Owls is Seney's 84th consecutive victory as a head coach over a Maryland Juco opponent. 

"This was a true college road game, like we knew it would be," Seney said. "I was so proud of my circle. We responded after a tough first half. We dug deep in that second half on the defensive end. Our shots weren't falling, but we buckled down and our defense won us that game. I have to give Harford credit, too. They are a good group."

The win also extended the Knights' (11-1, 2-0 Maryland Juco) current winning streak to eight, as they now prepare to travel to upstate New York to take on NJCAA Division II No. 8 ranked Niagara County Community College on Saturday. 

CCBC Essex trailed by 13 after the first quarter, hitting just 18.8% (3-16) of their shots from the field, including only 1-of-6 three pointers. 

And the second quarter was worse, as the Knights made only 3-of-19 (15.8%) shots overall. 

The third quarter was the turning point for Essex, as they outscored Harford 22-8. While they still did not break 30% from the field (6-21), they were able to make key baskets and hit 7-of-9 free throw attempts. 

With 4:46 remaining in the game, freshman Maciyah Washington (Bowie) hit a three-pointer to give the Knights their first lead of the game at 55-54. They would not relinquish.

Sophomore Mya Moye (Anacostia), Maryland Juco Women's Basketball November Athlete of the Month, finished with a game-high 19 points on 6-of-20 shooting (3-9 from three). She also had seven rebounds and four assists.

Moye is averaging 19.7 points per game, which ranks sixth in the conference and 23rd in NJCAA Division II. Her 5.8 assists per game are fourth in the conference and tied for 10th in the country. 

Sophomore Aislinn Flynn (Long Island Lutheran) finished with her fourth double-double of the season - and second in a row - on 11 points and 12 rebounds. She played all 40 minutes and added five blocks and an assist. 

Flynn averages 9.8 rebounds per game - 13th Maryland Juco, 30th NJCAA Division II - and 2.7 blocks per game (third in conference, seventh in the country).

Washington ended the night with 10 points (3-10), as did sophomore Kasey Gagan (St. Raphael Academy). Gagan added five assists, two boards and a steal.

The Knights play at the Thunderwolves Classic this weekend, beginning tomorrow with host Niagara County and Genesee Community College on Sunday.
