Frye homers in losses to Hagerstown

ARNOLD, MD – The Anne Arundel Community College Softball team dropped a conference doubleheader against visiting Hagerstown Community College Saturday afternoon at the AACC Softball Complex. The Hawks won the first game, 14-1, in five innings, and followed with a 10-0 six-inning win in the nightcap.

Sylvia Frye score the Riverhawks' lone run on the day, crushing her third home run of the season over the center field fence. More than half of Frye's 15 hits on the season have been for extra bases and she ranks third on the team with 11 RBI.

In game one, Hagerstown scored one in the top of the first before Frye answered back in the bottom of the second. A tough fourth inning for AACC's pitchers allowed seven Hawks to cross the plate, five by walk or hit batter.

Four runs on a pair of extra-base hits in the fifth propelled Hagerstown to the shortened win. Kaitlin Wolfe (4-1) earned the win for the Hawks, while AACC starter Veronica Hampton (3-4) shouldered the loss with 3.2 innings of work.

In the second game, AACC fell victim to Hagerstown ace Emily Talbert (5-2), who struck out 13 in the six-inning win. Meanwhile, The Hawks pounded out 12 hits in the win, including a two-run home run from Madisyn Renn in the third.

AACC seemed to get some life back in the fifth, as second baseman Mariah Melendez-Richardson made two flashy outs before pitcher Gracie Culley (5-5) nabbed a line drive to end the inning and strand a Hagerstown runner at first.

Heads up baserunning allowed Hagerstown to plate three in the sixth inning and AACC left one runner aboard in the final frame.

AACC faces visiting Potomac State Sunday in a home doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
