Cardinals Stomp Hagerstown 72-27 in Largest Margin of Victory This Year

CCBC Catonsville's women's basketball team recorded their largest margin of victory Thursday night, defeating the Hagerstown Community College Hawks by a whopping 45 points.

Every member of the Cardinal roster scored at least four points, with three players scoring in double digits as part of the 72-27 victory. The win moves Catonsville to 5-4 on the season with one more game to play before the winter break.

Facing a Hagerstown team without key players, the Cardinals quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead as freshman guard Lauryn Russell (Pallotti) nailed a three-pointer to open the scoring. Catonsville extended the lead to 18-3 at the end of the first quarter, with Russell hitting another three along the way.

The second quarter continued much like the first with Catonsville unleashing a barrage of scoring. The Cardinals extended the lead to 26-3 as it looked like Hagerstown would be held scoreless the entire second quarter. The Hawks finally started connecting on their shots toward halftime, but a last-second three-pointer by freshman guard Ahna Thomas (Bowie) ensured a 31-9 lead for the Cardinals.

With the game pretty much wrapped up at this point, the Cardinals spent the second half experimenting with different combinations of players on the floor. This ensured that every Cardinal player was able to score at least once, with the Cardinals continuing to extend their lead. Hagerstown had its most productive quarter in the third, as they lowered the deficit to 24 points. Still, the Cardinals led 52-20 heading into the fourth.

Catonsville continued to add to their lead in the fourth while holding Hagerstown to just seven total points in the quarter. Overall, the Cardinals held the Hawks to single digits in three of the four quarters to wrap up a dominant 72-27 victory.

Thomas finished the evening as the leading scorer for the Cardinals with 18 points, six steals, and four assists. Russel scored 12 points off of four three-pointers, while sophomore guard Amaree McKnight (National Christian Academy) added 11 points, four rebounds, and six steals.

Next up for the Cardinals is a Saturday matinee against Camden County College on December 17.
