Men’s Basketball Holds Off Late Push From Chesapeake College To Earn 67-61 Road Victory

Prince George's men's basketball entered Skipjack Arena at Chesapeake College on Wednesday evening, February 12th looking to extend their current winning streak to three straight. It appeared as the Owls were well on their way after building an early lead before Chesapeake College turned things around and put the Owls toughness to the test in the second half in what turned out to be a nail-biter.

The Owls wasted no time as they scored 10 unanswered points to start the game before surrendering their first basket to Chesapeake nearly three and a half minutes into the contest. The Owls later went on an 8-0 run which included two Brandon Joseph dunks to give Prince George's a 27-15 lead with under 9 minutes remaining in the first half. The Owls leaned on their ability to get inside during the first period, drawing the Skipjacks defenders and finding the open man to create high percentage shots which allowed Prince George's to enter halftime with a 37-28 lead. Owls sophomore Isaiah Miles led all scorers at the break with 13 points and 9 rebounds.

Chesapeake was able to flip the script to begin the second half as the Skipjacks scored 6 straight points and held the Owls without a basket until Tunde Scrivner was able to get Prince George's on the board with a made free throw over three minutes into the half. Chesapeake continued to pressure the Owls, coming to within 2 points of Prince George's several times over the next few minutes but the Owls were able to continually respond with just enough scoring to stay in the lead until the Skipjacks tied things up at 46 with 10:49 remaining. The Owls would create just enough space to remain in front of the Skipjacks before they would respond with a basket of their own, but weren't ever able to take the lead from Prince George's. The Skipjacks again tied the score at 55 with under five minutes remaining, bringing the Chesapeake crowd to its feet before sophomore Devin Hill showed up for the Owls. Hill went on to score 10 of the Owls final 12 points over the last five minutes, including hitting all six of his attempts from the free throw line to ice the game for Prince George's who prevailed, 67-61. Prince George's improved to 16-7, 6-6 MD JUCO with the victory.

Miles finished tied as the game's leading scorer with 20 points, adding 14 rebounds in his ninth double-double performance of the season. Hill finished just behind Miles with 18 points to go along with 6 rebounds. The Owls collectively shot nearly 79% (15-19) from the free throw line in the win, including Hill who finished a perfect 9-9. Prince George's has a few days of rest before they will travel to Hagerstown to take on the Hawks Monday night, February 17th in the Owls final regular season game of the 2019-2020 season.
