Women's Basketball Splits Thunderwolves Classic

SANBORN, NY… The Genesee Community College women's basketball team split their two contests at the Thunderwolves Classic hosted at Niagara County Community College over the weekend. Genesee defeated Henry Ford College 101-79 and then lost to NJCAA Division II no.9 CCBC Essex 85-43.

NJCAA Division II, and NJCAA Region III Player of the Week Alayah Sweeney scored 50 points to lead all scorers against Henry Ford. Sweeney also collected 14 rebounds, eight assists, and seven steals. Sweeney became the first Cougars player since Eva Kandelcova nearly two decades ago to score 50 points or more in a single game. Erina Ishiguro scored 26 points with collecting four rebounds and dishing out three assists. Tylasia Weaver scored seven points with six rebounds and four assists. Crystal Bivar collected 10 rebounds.  

Sunday's contest against NJCAA Division II CCBC Essex proved to be a tough challenge for the Cougars, as the Knights came out and nearly doubling up Genesee, winning the contest 85-43. All Tournament team selection Alayah Sweeney recorded another double-double, leading the way offensively for Genesee with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Erina Ishiguro scored eight points. Gabrielle Burroughs and Crystal Bivar scored five points each.

Genesee (7-8) will return from winter break with a home contest against the Herkimer College Generals on Tuesday January 14, 2020 at 2pm. The game will be streamed live on www.geneseeathletics.com
