Potomac State falls to No. 11 Walters State 6-5

Sumter, SC- For the second straight day, Potomac State was unable to hold a mid-game lead as they fell to Walters State Community College 6-5. 

The Catamounts took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Hayden Almond singled and drove in Trevor Thomas who had doubled. 

The Senators scored two in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.  Caleb McNeely singled with one out, and then Jerry Hammons was hit by a pitch.  A wild pitch moved both runners up before Bryce Hodge singled to score both runs.

WSCCC added a run in the fourth when Seth Gardner and Michael Robinson led off with back-to-back singles.  Both runners moved up via a stolen base before Gardner scampered home on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 3-1.

Potomac State took the lead in the top of the fifth with a four-run inning. 

Zack Whitacre led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch.  He moved to third on a groundout and then scored on a single from Thomas.  After a strikeout, Almond laced a double to put runners at second and third.

Graham Brown then delivered a clutch double to score both runs.  Devon Neal was then hit by a pitch, and Caleb Taylor singled to score Brown and give PSC a 5-3 lead.

Hammons quickly got the Senators to within one with a solo home run to lead off the fifth, it was his first of the year.

Walters State added two more runs after a single from Hodge and a run-scoring double from Brayden Runion.  Runion then moved up on a passed ball and then scored on a sacrifice fly bat Gardner.

Nathan Hickman retired the final seven hitters of the game to pick up his first win of the season.

Austin Cross took the loss for PSC.  The lefthander worked 4 2/3 innings, striking out three and surrendering 10 hits and six runs, five of which were earned.

Caleb Taylor finished with three hits for Potomac State, who falls to 0-3 on the young season.

Thomas finished 2-3 with a single, double and RBI.

The Catamounts return to South Carolina next weekend for a four-games series in Florence, SC.
