Cardinals Drop Fourth Straight Game

Cardinals Drop Fourth Straight Game

On February 7, the Cardinals women's basketball team faced the College of Southern Maryland, losing 65-56.

After a slow start from the Cardinals, the team would fight back to make it a close game late. Unfortunately, the Cardinals efforts would come up short, as the Cardinals would go on to lose their fourth straight 65-56.

The first quarter would not be kind to the Cardinals, as they would struggle to get anything going on offense. The Hawks would take a 19-12 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter the Cardinals would get off to a much better start, thanks to five quick points from Amaree McKnight (National Christian Academy). An Ah'niya Tillery (Coppin Academy) three-pointer would tie the game 24-24 with six minutes left in the half. However, the Cardinals offense would stall again, as the Cardinals would score just five points in the rest of the half. The Hawks would take a 40-29 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Cardinals defense would take a step up, holding the Hawks to eight points in the quarter. However, the Cardinals offense would struggle as well, only scoring 10 points in the quarter. Amaree McKnight would end the quarter with five points, closing the Cardinals deficit to nine as they trailed going into the fourth quarter, 48-39.

In the fourth quarter the Cardinals would mount a strong comeback effort. The Cardinals would score seven points in under a minute thanks to a Kayla Cabbagestalk (Chesapeake High School) jump shot and two free throws and a three-pointer from Ah'niya Tillery, drawing the Cardinals to within two points. However, the Cardinals offense would go cold to end the game, as the Hawks would pull away late, as the Cardinals would fall 65-56.

The leading scorer for the Cardinals was Amaree McKnight, who finished with 20 points and nine rebounds. Kayla Cabbagestalk would finish with a double-double, scoring 13 points with 11 rebounds. Off the bench, Ah'niya Tillery would finish with 13 points.

The Cardinals are now 9-9. Their next game is against Howard Community College at home on February 13, at 5pm.
