Lakers Red Hot Bats Guide Team to a 4-0 Start

GREENSBURG, P.A. - The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team opened up their season with a pair of doubleheaders on the road at Westmoreland County Community College on March 4th and 5th at Seton Hill University.

Game 1, March 4th

The Lakers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in game one, with sophomore Tyler Cerame (Hilton, N.Y./ Hilton) scoring on a passed ball in the first inning. The Lakers would add another run in the second when Jorge Oropeza III (Rochester, N.Y./ Greece Athena) drove in fellow Greece Athena grad Lucas Sulimowicz (Rochester, N.Y./ Greece Athena) on a sac fly to jump out to a 2-0 advantage after two innings.

The Wolfpack would score a run to narrow the gap to 2-1 in the fifth before DJ Stoianovich (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) doubled home Matthew DiSanti (Farmingdale, N.Y./ Farmingdale) to extend their lead to 3-1 in the sixth. The Lakers would add an insurance run in the seventh when Brendan McCrosson (Mahopac, N.Y./ Mahopac) drove in Ryan Mettler (Middleport, N.Y./ Royalton-Hartland) to wrap up the scoring in a 4-1 finish for the Lakers.

Sophomore Tanner Frank (Rochester, N.Y./ Brighton) earned the win for the Lakers, pitching four shutout innings, while teammate Peyton Ahlstrom (Dunkirk, N.Y./ Dunkirk) closed the door on the Wolfpack for his first save of the season.

Game 2, March 4th

The Lakers would start off slow but come from behind win in game two was fueled by a five-run performance in the seventh inning to secure an 8-3 win. Matthew DiSanti and DJ Stoianovich each drove in two runs apiece to lead the offense.

Devin Georgetti (Rochester, N.Y./ Gates Chili) earned the start on the mound, striking out nine batters in five innings and surrendering a single run. Peyton Ahlstrom picked up the win with a scoreless 1.1 innings to secure the win.

Game 1, March 5th

The Lakers started out hot in game one, jumping out to a 5-0 lead over the Wolfpack; riding the advantage to a 15-4 win. Freshman Danny Melendez (Victor, N.Y./ Victor) led the way with three hits, while sophomore catcher Donevan Rotmans (Rochester, N.Y./ Gates Chili) would hit his first career grand slam. Sophomore Kenny Murphy (Rochester, N.Y./ Webster Schroeder) collected four hits in the dominant victory.

On the mound, the Lakers were led by Dan Caverly (Farmington, N.Y./ Victor) who picked up his first win of the season in the commanding victory.

Game 2, March 5th

Much like they did throughout the series, the Lakers continued to dominate offensively, pouring in 16 runs on 19 hits in just six innings against the Wolfpack. Freshman infielder Ryan Mettler stole the show, going a perfect 4-4 at the plate, and punching in five RBIs. Freshman Collin Clark (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) picked up three hits with doubles, and teammate Alex Ahlstrom (Dunkirk, N.Y./ Dunkirk) would drive in three runs. 

Lefty Michael Protz (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) earned his first win of the season, striking out seven batters over four innings while only allowing one hit.
