WOLFPACK RALLY TO BEAT ALLEGANY IN OT

YOUNGWOOD, Pa. - Freshman Ethan Turnbull finished a hat trick in his first collegiate match by scoring 3:52 into the first overtime to lift the Westmoreland County Community College men's soccer team to a 5-4 victory over visiting Allegany (Md.) College Thursday afternoon in the season opener for the Wolfpack.

In addition to giving Westmoreland a 1-0 start to the season, the triumph also snapped a long streak. The victory was the first for the Wolfpack since a 12-2 decision over Lorain on Sept. 26, 2015, snapping a 40-match winless streak. Westmoreland's last non-loss was a 1-1 draw with Allegany in the 2016 season finale.

Turnbull wasted little time collecting his first collegiate goals, as he posted two scores in the first 20 minutes to push Westmoreland to a 2-0 victory. Allegany answered back with a pair of strikes before halftime to tie the match and then scored early in the second half to take a 3-2 lead.

The Wolfpack rallied the first time when Matt Henderson scored a few minutes later. Allegheny regained the lead with a score but Westmoreland answered again, this time off a header from Evan Curley to even the match at 4-4. The contest went into overtime and the Wolfpack struck for the winner when a Turnbull shot from the left side of the box squeezed through to set off a wild celebration, as Westmoreland gave new head coach Mitchell Steele a win in his first match on the sideline.

Turnbull's three goals was the highlight of the match, but joining him with multiple points was Henderson with one goal and two assists and Curley with one goal and one assist. Also posting assists in the win were Matt Tomko, Michael Stanley and Troy Oft. In goal, Luke Brummett stopped 14 shots in the match.

Westmoreland will return to the field Tuesday, Sept. 3rd when it hosts Potomac State at 4 pm.
