Cardinals Winning Streak Ends in High-Scoring Contest

On January 31, the CCBC Catonsville women's basketball team took on WVU Potomac State College, losing a close battle 90-84.  

After a first half that ended with both teams tied, and Catonsville down one going into the fourth quarter, this game was set to be decided in the final 10 minutes. Unfortunately, the Cardinals would fall short in the end, losing 90-84. 

In the first quarter, Ahna Thomas (Bowie High School) would start off strong, scoring five points within the first minute of the game. Jump shots from Ahna Thomas and Amaree McKnight (National Christian Academy) would see the Cardinals take a 9-2 lead with just under four minutes to go in the quarter. The Cardinals offense would continue to go back and forth with the Catamounts, the Cardinals would end the first quarter with a three-point lead, 21-18. 

In the second quarter, Ahna Thomas would get off to another hot start, scoring five points within the first two minutes of the half. The Catamounts would take a late lead in the half, going up 41-37 with 38 seconds on the clock. However, a clutch jump shot by Destiny Perry (Sparrows Point High School) and two free throws by Amaree McKnight would see the Cardinals tie things up before the half, 41-41. 

In the third quarter, it would be Destiny Perry who would have the hot hand, making two jump shots and a free throw within the first minute of the game. Destiny Perry would finish the quarter with 11 points. Both the Cardinals and Catamounts offenses would trade blows. A late layup from the Catamounts would see the Cardinals trail by one as they headed into the fourth quarter.  

Early in the fourth quarter, jump shots from Alfreda Potter (Carroll Christian School) and Ah'niya Tillery (Coppin Academy) would see the Cardinals that back the lead. The Cardinals would find themselves down seven with two minutes to go in the game. A Destiny Perry layup, two Ahna Thomas free throws, and a Ah'niya Tillery jump shot would see the Cardinals pull to within two points of the Catamounts. However, the Catamounts would go on a hot streak to end the game, as the Cardinals would fall 90-84. 

The leading scorer for the Cardinals was Ahna Thomas, finishing with 25 points going 5-5 from the three-point line. Destiny Perry finished with 21 points to go along with seven rebounds. Ah'niya Tillery would finish with 15 points off the bench, and Amaree McKnight would finish with 14 points.  

The Cardinals are now 11-11
