Cardinals Comeback For Third Straight Win

Cardinals Comeback For Third Straight Win

On January 25, the CCBC Women's basketball team took on Prince George's Community College, coming out victorious 63-45.

The Cardinals were down 32-26 at halftime. However, it would be a different story for the Cardinals after the break, only giving up 13 points in the second half whilst scoring 27 to take home their ninth victory of the season 63-45.

After starting the first quarter scoreless for the first 5 minutes, the Cardinals would go on a run, scoring 9 points in 3 minutes. However, Prince George's would find their stride and comeback to end the first quarter with the lead 13-15.

In the second quarter, 4 points from Destiny Perry (Sparrows Point High School) would see the Cardinals take the lead 19-18. A three-pointer from Lauryn Russell (Pallotti High School) created a 4-point lead for the Cardinals. After going back and forth for most of the quarter, Prince George's would end the half with back-to-back three-pointers, giving Prince George's a 32-26 at the half.

The second half would be where the Cardinals would start their comeback charge. Thanks to a hot start from the Cardinals, their halftime deficit was erased within the first three minutes, with the Cardinals pulling ahead 33-32 thanks to a Kayla Cabbagestalk (Chesapeake High School) jump shot. A three-pointer from Lauryn Russell with a minute to go in the quarter would see the Cardinals take a 45-38 lead.

It would be much more of the same dominance from the Cardinals in the fourth quarter, with the Cardinals defense giving up just 5 minutes in the final quarter. Another early barrage from the Cardinals offense would see their lead grow to 12 within the first three minutes of the quarter. Five straight free throws from Destiny Perry and a layup from Amaree McKnight (National Christian Academy) would see the Cardinals win the game 63-45.

The Cardinals offense was led by Destiny Perry, who scored 17 points, setting a new second highest single game total for herself on the season. Amaree McKnight would finish with a double-double scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds, setting a personal season high in rebounds. Kayla Cabbagestalk would also finish with a double-double, scoring 10 with 10 rebounds.

The Cardinals now sit at 9-5. The next matchup for the Cardinals comes on January 27 against Garrett College at 5pm.
