Men's and Women's Basketball Win Home Openers
Both the Erie men's and women's baseball teams won their 2023-24 season home openers at the Burt Flickinger center on Saturday.
First up, the women took on Community College of Allegheny County and defeated the Wild Cats 48-37. Both teams had a slow start to the game with only 12 total points scored in the first quarter and Erie shooting only 5.6% in field goal attempts. The Kats found themselves down 27-14 at the half. Erie would begin their comeback early in the third quarter going on a 14-0 run to take the lead at 30-29 for the first time in the game. The Kats would never trail again enroute to the victory.
Standouts for Erie were sophomore Mia Special and freshman Alexandria Silverstor. Special played 38 minutes, tallying 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals while Silverstor hit for a double-double putting up 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Up next, the men defeated Bryant and Stratton (OH) 77-66 for their second win of the season. Sophomore forward Waseem Ajeigbe hit a three point shot to open the game and the Kats never relinquished the lead. Leading the Kats in scoring was sophomore Hugo Silva with 21. A'Mag Tate added 12 and Ajeigbe finished with 11. The victory improves the Kats to 2-0 after they defeated Corning Community College 103-81 on Wednesday.
The men are right back at it on Sunday when they will host Genesee Community College at 1:00 pm.
